I completely understand Joe's philosophy. Absorb nutrients, give your digestive system a break and heal your body. If you're overweight, you'll also get slimmer!

Here is my problem: SUGAR!

Every recipe is full of it. Yes it's natural sugar, but no matter form it is, in the end its sugar and your body will treat it and react accordingly. Do not be fooled by his green juices, because once those 4 apples and pears are added, you will on a massive sugar high!

I looked on a few online forums and people are suggesting that you follow a 80/20 ratio of vegetables to fruit when making your juices whilst following Joe's philosophy. In my opinion, once you do that, you are no longer following Joe's philosophy, you're just juicing.

And then there are those like me, who even react to the natural sugars found in vegetables once they are juiced. For some reason, I need the fiber to keep everything stable.

I got through 3 days of Joe's reboot before I broke out in a huge rash and my mouth was full of bacteria and not the "die off" variety. The juices were also hard to drink because of their sweetness and they made my teeth hurt.

I think you can get better results from a short water fast followed by green smoothies (which use the whole fruit and vegetable) and maybe just juicing starchy components like carrots, beets, sweet potato and parsnip every once in a while.

I feel like Joe sold out a little in that he made his juices so appealing that they are easy to drink for any one that is used to already eating a lot of sugar. You may lose weight but you will also develop other health issues from excessive sugar.

I finished reading this awhile ago, but didn't do a review at the time, because I wanted to actually TRY the diet before I did so. I have now gone 5 days (of a planned 7 - 10 days) on it ... and am VERY pleased with the results. I have lost 7.8 lbs. in those five days... and feel fantastic. The first two days were a bit rough (headaches, sluggish) but after that, it is really quite easy to follow. I DID modify Joe's plan a tiny bit - I didn't give up coffee, since that HELPS with metabolism, and I was doing this strictly to lose weight, NOT to deal with any underlying health issues, as he was. I also used HPP bottled juice (which he specified was fine - I used Suja, which is inexpensive at Costco and tastes OK), since I didn't want to juice all the time - but added some chopped up fresh veggies and fruits for a bit of fiber. I also (as he again said was OK) added some protein powder every now and then, so as not to have any muscle atrophy. The main thing I liked is that, as you can see, results were rapid...many times I will try a diet, but give up quickly when I don't see immediate results. I entreat anyone with long time weight issues (I have yo-yo-ed all my life) to give it a try... and also watch his entertaining and inspiring films (Fat Sick and Nearly Dead 1 and 2). ...more

So at 42 (almost 43) I feel like I'm falling apart, the wheels are coming off my wagon. I SOOOOOO needed to read this book. I recommend this book to ANYONE who cares about their health!

There's a lot to like about this book. First of all, the author - he's enthusiastic, knowledgeable about his subject, encouraging and very positive. I have been juicing on and off for about 15 years so understand and appreciate the health benefits. And, as a longstanding vegetarian (for more than half my life now) I like his approach to healthy eating.

However, the reason why I have only given the book 3 stars is because, having read it, I'm not entirely convinced that this is the right approach to losing weight. It clearly worked for Joe Cross and it will work for many others, but I don't wholly agree with the consumption of juices purely to lose weight. My approach has always been to include juices in a daily diet for long term health, complementary to eating a sensible healthy diet. It seems a bit too quick fix to me and is not sustainable for any lengthy period. As he says in the book, he did a 60 day "Reboot" which he doesn't recommend for anyone without medical advice. By all means include lots of the advice in this book, which is nutritional, but I am wary of juice-only diets which I think have the potential to cause digestive discomfort, and can be severely lacking in fibre.

However, I have taken some very useful hints and tips from the book and some great new ideas for juices and other recipes, which is now joining my collection of healthy eating and cookery books.

3.5 stars.

I bought this book thinking it was the story of the documentary 'Fat, sick & nearly dead'. Most reviews I read seemed to suggest it was (well, that's how I understood them).

It is not, however. This book is basically a recipe book. And as far as recipe books go, this is a nice one to have. It's well organized and the juices are relatively simple to make. The book suggests a number of plans to get you started (5 day reboot, 10 day reboot, etc), and all ingredients are listed so it's easy

Is this book for everyone ?
In my opinion : no.
The ingredients for a 5 day reboot would blow my food budget for an entire month ...

But I will try and put the book to good use by incorporating a juice into my diet as often as I can. That can't be bad either. :-)

I honestly do not know why this works better than just eating fruits and vegetables, but I would guess it's because by juicing, you're able to get the nutrition of many more fruits and vegetables into your system at once. There's no way I would ever eat what I managed to juice in a day. And there's no way I would ever eat kale, either. I was juicing a bunch of kale every week and it'd take me a year to eat a bunch of kale... if ever.

Excellent book for anyone wanting a healthier life!!!

I loved this book! Joe Cross helps us to understand what a reboot is, the benefits, and shares many success stories. Best of all, he tackles the obstacles that one may experience on a reboot, so we can plan accordingly and avoid them. This is a guide for anyone looking for a healthy way to eat as opposed to a "diet". Juice On friends!!!

He developed large welts all over his body at any unexpected point in time and for unknown reasons. He developed large welts all over his body at any unexpected point in time and for unknown reasons. He felt he had one foot in the grave, just as I feel now at age 56, and decided to Reboot his body by solid juicing for the next 60 days. During this period , Joe lost 100 pounds, dropped all meds, and all symptoms of his urticaria disappeared completely. This is his story, and he takes the guess work out and shows you exactly how-to Reboot your body on a 3, 5, 10, or 15-day juice fast. Only shop for about 3 days of fresh juice at a time...5 at the most. That's probably all you will have room for in the fridge. Be sure to watch his documentary, "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" for amazing stories of inspiration and more juice recipes.

Joe brings his juicer with him on road trips and juices in the back of his vehicle using some kind of battery charger and a Breville juicer. He doesn't have to cut up his veggies. It seems to run fast, and he does mention that you can rejuice your pulp if it seems wet.... as may not be the best juicer.

He doesn't recommend fasting for more than 15 days without working with your doctor. As long as you juice 80% vegetables to 20% fruits, and juice a wide variety of colors, fifteen days is safe enough that the lower protein shouldn't be a problem. But, if you go longer, then you should add a pea protein drink to your daily diet as well.

The only vitamins you can continue to take if you'd like is vitamin D3 and a B12. No other non-prescription vitamin or drug should be taken. Continue your prescription drugs but keep close contact with your doctor. Remember, you will be consuming a much larger concentration of micronutrients in the form of juice from a much larger amount of fruits and vegetables that would be impossible to eat in whole form. CONCENTRATED!

On a Reboot juice fast, you should be drinking 4-6 (16-20 oz) servings daily...more if you are still hungry, and at least 64 oz other fluids:

- 1 c. hot water with lemon/ginger first thing EVERY morning (put slice of lemon and slice of ginger in mug, pour boiling water over and let steep 3-5 min)
- 2 glasses (16 oz) coconut water for mid-morning snack [adds electrolytes]
- 4 glasses (16 oz) water
- 1 c. Herbal tea at bedtime

DAY AT-A-GLANCE COLOR JUICE GUIDE

- Wakeup - Drink 8 oz hot water with lemon & ginger
- Breakfast - Orange or Red juice
- Mid-morning - 16 oz unflavored coconut water
- Lunch - Green juice
- Afternoon snack - Green or Red juice
- Dinner - Green juice
- Dessert - Purple or Orange juice
- Bedtime - Herbal tea

Use his colored coded recipes on pages 173-188. Also, Joe has more recipes on his website at: www.rebootwithjoe.com/recipes.

"Joe's Mean Green", p. 182 (green juice) could be a daily alkaline green juice perfect for Ben and his gout and me and my bad digestive system. This makes 2 servings:

2 cucumbers
8 celery sticks
4 apples
16 kale leaves
1 lemon
2" piece fresh ginger root

I already saw both of Joe's films " Fat sick and nearly dead 1 & 2" I really liked both movies. So I decided to read one of his books. Enjoyed reading the book.

This juicing plan is easy enough to follow for those wanting to lose a few pounds or 100 or more - It has helped a lot of people lose weight and and keep it off! For some, get their body back to a health state and feel amazing! The success stories are very motivating for the ones that really need the willpower to stick with this plan.

Awesome Information, I'm Rebooting Today!

Just finished Joes book and it makes the Reboot process so easy to understand and follow. It explained all the details of how to prepare for, plan, set up, execute, and follow through with healthier nutrition through juicing. Lots of great resources sited. Definitely will keep as a reference in my collection and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to reboot their health.

Great juicing resource

I got a juicer for Christmas, but wasn't sure where to start. I've watched Joe's documentaries so I decided to read his book as well. It is a great guide on how to prepare different fruits and veggies as well as recipients and guides for different length reboots. I feel much more comfortable using my juicer after reading this book.

After watching Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead shortly after the documentary made its way to Netflix, I was hit with a reality check and have been following Joe Cross ever since. Finally though, I was able to sit down and read his books, leading into reading his latest book, Juice It to Lose It. First up? The Reboot With Joe along with his follow cookbook.

In The Reboot With Joe, readers get a breakdown of what it means to really prepare and plan for a reboot, the importance of community and support during the reboot, and the significance that confidence in yourself can have in motivating you to keep going. I've read and heard all of this before but it's always great to see again and again. An affirmation of sorts.

Throughout the book, Joe talks about incorporating more healthy foods while reducing your junk foods as you transition into a healthier lifestyle. Key word: transition. Going cold turkey is not recommended. It can be done that way but for long term success, it's best for most people to slowly eliminate the bad and gradually increase the good. For me, I slowly eliminated the bad and was not shy at all about packing on the good and that worked for me. Find out what works for you.

This is important because when you get to the point where you find out what works for you, you get past all of those silly excuses that Joe mentions like not knowing how to chop or slice fruits & vegetables (learn, it's really not that hard), traveling (new flash: planning ahead of time is a thing that you can do and if you have a smartphone there is NO excuse. Get the GateGuru app for one). "In hindsight," Joe says in the book, "The only thing I was exercising was denial!"

Can people retrain their systems to prefer the foods that are naturally healthier for them and leave behind what I call "Toxic hunger"–cravings for and addictions to unhealthy foods? I know for a fact that they can. – Joe Cross

Once you've accepted that you are the problem, the one standing in your own way and you start taking steps to course correct, make sure you don't get caught up in a diet trap. Because this is not a diet. It's a lifestyle.

I love that Joe mentions that people often put so much focus on calorie counting that they don't ever stop to think and focus on the actual nutrients as well as ingredients that they can't even pronounce which are unnecessary that they are putting into their body.

Making a transition to healthy eating can literally reverse the progress of chronic diseases, can prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and strokes; and can dramatically extend lifespan and healthy life expectancy.

Many years ago, I did calorie count for the first few months of my transition into a healthier lifestyle (as I was heading towards obesity if I didn't get it together) but that's all I needed to understand calories and food and see what my body needs each day. A few months of counting. No more. Once I got a handle on that, I knew that it was not the end all so I refused to stay stuck in the calorie counting mindset which can turn into its own addiction/prison. Educate yourself on calorie counting. Do it if you want but it's actually (gasp!) not necessary for everyone. The important part here is that at some point in your journey you start listening to your body, start understanding what your body needs and wants and giving your body all that it needs and occasionally what it wants and regularly exercising. So after a few months of counting, educating myself, learning to listen to my body, and finding a rhythm with my exercise routine, I stopped counting and then took a look underneath the surface to really examine what exactly I was putting into my body. That's about the time I discovered Joe's documentary. It came at the perfect time!

I think this book is perfect for that person on the beginning of their journey as they transition into a healthier lifestyle. While I can't say that I came out of this book learning much that I didn't already know before, since I have been on this journey for awhile now, I can say that the one thing that I did pick up was color coding. For example, if I'm out of strawberries, I can just use another red fruit as a replacement. A pretty obvious fix but sometimes it's what starting us right in the face that's the thing we don't see. So I'll definitely be incorporating that into the days when I start to run on low certain things.

Throughout the book there are success stories shared, outlines of reboots whether 3 days, 5 days, 15 days, or 30 days, there's a reboot for you. With shopping lists set up for you and more than a handful of recipes to get you going. There's a produce preparation guide, shopping and storage tips, a section on the types of juicers, a resources list and basically the questions you had that caused you to stall answered here so now the ball is in your court and you know how to take a shot, so now it's time to take it.

The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Feel Amazing is a solid introduction to rebooting your system and starting your healthy lifestyle. If you're serious about rebooting and want to juice or are just curious about the juicing process, get this book.

When I saw this book on netgalley I wanted to give it a try. Juicing can be used for a lot of reasons, detox, lose weight, change the way you eat. In my case it was for me to try and get more fruit and veg into my system as I am such a fussy eater. I'm lucky to hit my 1 portion of my 5 a day. However I am a smell and look eater, I have to like the smell of something and the look of something before I eat which is why a lot of veg is not in my diet and also one of the reasons I am so fussy. According to my Mum I have been like this since I was a baby, so it's not a new thing in my life, however I am making a more conscious effort to eat more food that is better for me. My roast dinners now have veg included on my plate rather than the meat, potato and processed peas.

The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet had a lot of inspirational stories in it. From Joe's own story, to stories of people who have changed their diets and followed this new way of living healthily. There are recipes for juices, smoothies, healthy breakfasts, soups etc, and gives examples of different ways to approach this book. From detoxing to prepare for the diet, and how many days to follow it for depending on what you want to achieve from it.
For me, although I would love to loose weight by following this book, it was mainly a way for me to get more healthy foods into my body. I read the recipes looking for ideas and found a few, but again, being so fussy I already know I don't like a lot for the foods added to the juices, smoothies etc so I know I will have to change some things out for food I do like. I know it's not the aim of the book, to read it and then disregard the ingredients, but I am THAT fussy, and since I know I won't be following it word for word, ingredient for ingredient I am trying to follow it as close as possible as I can, choosing recipes that I mostly like and only having to change out one or two things.

I did enjoy the real life examples in this book, and how inspirational it has been, my only problem with this book was the lack of pictures, which may change with the actual hard copy, without the pictures I have no way to prepare myself for what the drinks will look like until they are actually made which is slightly daunting for me.

I have already tried a mostly modified recipe from the book and I did have plans to add the video but that didn't work out, instead I have a photo of the finished product. Apple, pear, carrot and milk smoothie.......which I didn't really like and will have to try a more stronger flavoured fruit to counterbalance the taste of the veg.

I've been feeling fatigued and generally unwell for a while now, and will pretty much try anything that lets me feel anywhere close to normal. I'm currently on the second day of a five-day plan, although I have found that woman cannot live by juice alone, and am also eating a green salad with the lunchtime juice and a plain baked potato with the dinnertime juice. The overall point for me is to make better eating choices that ultimately lead to better health, so if "cheating" takes the form of a salad instead of ordering a pizza, I think I'm doing pretty well. The plan includes a week of preparation that includes eliminating meat and dairy leading up to the juice fast, so in just a week I'm already much more conscious of what I'm putting into my body, eating more fresh, whole food, and making fewer bad, lazy choices with food.

I'm finding the book useful for several reasons. The "inspiration" part was covered in the movie, but the book lays out several different plans for those who want to try juicing. The plans incorporate different variations on juicing and eating, with recommended recipes for each day and a shopping list. The shopping list was invaluable because it saved me from having to pick out recipes and then count how many beets or carrots I'd need. I just dog-eared that page, took the book to the produce section of my grocery store, and was ready to start. I've also been able to find answers to pretty much all of my questions as I started, like "What about protein?" and "Hrrm, why is that happening to my digestive system today?"

Some of the more fruit-heavy recipes are pretty high in carbs, so people with diabetes will want to be conscious of that. Many of them are well within the recommended number of carb servings per meal that someone with Type 2 diabetes can consume, however, and many of the recipes are pretty high in fiber so there are fewer digestible carbs.

I do seem to be feeling more energy on day two than I have for quite some time now. If that's the result of juicing, I'll consider it well worth having given up pizza. This isn't for everyone, but what I was looking for with this book and this plan was a radical shift in how I think about food, and so far I'm accomplishing that. Now I just have to keep accomplishing that every day.

When I started to read this book I thought that in the first few pages I would get tired of it and never reach the end -just like with every other book of this genre. But I have to admit that I was genuinely surprised and in a good way.

It is the way it is written that makes the difference; in small sections refering to a particular thing each time and simple vocabulary instead of tiresome and lengthy chapters filled with fancy words. I also liked the fact that Mr. Cross doesn't pretend to be a guru or a know-it-all, he doesn't criticize the reader's choices. On the contrary he offers scientifical facts to support his arguments, encourages people to talk to their doctors and offers an alternative choice in such a way that can be turned into a lifestyle.
I wouldn't say that he offers the motivation people need to try and change their lifestyle, this is something that is found deep inside our hearts, but while reading this book I did realise that I was asking myself these questions and giving myself honest answers. So even though the book cannot give the reader a motive it can help in other ways.
Moreover, I found it very informative. I liked the recipes (for foods that can be actually eaten by real people) and I liked the fact that, were I to start a Reboot, this book would help me not only to find the perfect Reboot for me, but it would also guide me through it. After I finished reading it (and yes, I still cannot believe that I reach the end) I felt that I was fully informed about everything I would need to know about 'Rebooting' from my shopping list to how I could turn those newfound healthier eating habbits a way of life.
I think I am finaly mature enough for a change and this could be a very good start...

Having recently read Joe's new book Juice It to Lose It, I was curious how it differed from his first book. When I initially began reading this one I thought it was going to be a lot of what I'd already read in the new book, but I have to say that wasn't the case. I mean, there is definitely a lot of overlap due to the nature of the books; however, there was certainly a lot of material covered in this one that wasn't in the most recent publication.

In The Reboot With Joe Juice Diet Joe discusses at length a variety of juice plans, not just the five day plan. In fact, in this book he pretty much recommends a longer plan of at least 7 days. I'm not sure what changed in his mind between when he wrote this and Juice It to Lose It, but there you have it. Additionally, in this book Joe gives readers tips, recommendations, and recipes for 3, 5, 10, 15, and 30 day plans.

Also included throughout this guide to a better and healthier life are actual, real life testimonials from others besides Joe himself. These success stories are not only inspirational but motivational. They show that not only can this idea of a reboot truly reset your system temporarily, but with dedication it can be a whole new way of life. I loved that the author included before and after photos of himself and his included success story candidates at the end of the book. Seeing is believing, and there's no way to deny the drastic changes that is clearly evident in all of the photos.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for once again providing me with the opportunity to review Joe's book. I hope I can be diligent enough to put some of these tips and suggestions into practice in my own life. Who knew juicing could sound so doable.

The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet was an informative book with a lot of helpful information. It was a continuation, in my opinion, of his previous platform. This book discussed the merits of adopting a periodic juicing/green lifestyle. It was both educational and functional.

What I really liked about this book was the simple breakdown of meal plan suggestions and the tasty recipe listings. For the food prep-challenged, such as myself, this was a plus. I was not overwhelmed. The ingredients were not so unfamiliar. I loved that Cross presented creative options that proved workable for someone like me.

Although Cross did not exclusively limit or oppose an animal-based diet, he did strongly encourage smarter, healthier choices regarding food intake. He also discussed foods that should be excluded from one's diet in order to be most successful.

An added bonus with this book was the recommended online community and support. After reading, I referred to the site and I must say that I liked what I saw.

While this book falls in line with other "lifestyle change" books I have reviewed, I still believe that there was a benefit in reading it.

This book is for those who want to try juicing and are looking for some guidance. It is especially for those who have seen the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and were inspired to make a change. The book provides a lot of information on motivation, the benefits of juicing, what juicing is, success stories, and a number of different plans to try along with a variety of recipes.

I made the Cabbage Patch juice and the Avocado Cream of Mushroom Soup. The juice was delicious--you couldn't taste the cabbage at all and the chard was very mild. It was a horrible color, but tasted great. The soup was strange--a bit like guacamole soup. But then, I just realized I forgot to blend it, which may have made a difference. However, given the fact that there was more bell pepper and tomato than mushroom, maybe it wouldn't have made much difference to the taste, just the texture.

I really liked the number of options provided to allow people flexibility in trying out juice fasts, from short to long. The author emphasizes the importance of consulting with your doctor ahead of time, even if you don't have any health issues, but especially if you do. He did his long fast under a doctor's supervision and makes that clear. I must say that this book makes a juice fast look very achievable.

I received a copy for review through NetGalley.

I now eat one meal plus snacks and juice at least two 16 oz. juices a day. By juicing I was able to eliminate most my arthritis pain and it helped me get off processed and diary foods. Joe lays out the plans in informative and friendly manner. He is very encouraging and his website has a large and supportive community. I highly recommend the book, website and the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" to anyone looking to improve their health. ...more

In January, Jason and I watched 30 documentaries in 30 days, where we 'met' author Joe Cross in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.   During the Read-a-Thon last month I read this book where Joe outlines different ways to try his juicing challenge.  In the movie Joe went 60 days drinking nothing but freshly made fruit and veggie juices, but this book outlines different choices depending on your specific needs.

I am trying my own version of this diet this month for my 30 day challenge, closer to Joe's original diet than the ones he talks about here.  You can follow my progress here.  I've lost 9 pounds in 11 days and feel really good.
The book has recipes and I tried a few at the beginning, but it's easier just to make your own concoction with whatever you like and have on hand.  There are also inspiring stories and photos from people who have tried the diet.  This is a good place to start after seeing the documentary.

Really good book. Explains Joe's approach to juicing in a way that you would explain things to a mate. Juicing is broken down into day by day chunks with a wide range of recipes to stave off boredom from repetition.
He makes it clear from the start that juicing is only a short term thing and that it's just being used to give your body a break and a chance to REBOOT before you make new choices about what fuels your body. Your told about the crappy side effects that can accompany a reboot.
I'm say

I'm saying that the book is completed as I've read it all the way through, but I'll be keeping it close at hand as I begin my reboot. I won't lie I've tried reboots several times since watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, the film about Joe's own journey and failed to go more than a couple of days, but I think the book will help me this time. It will be heavily thumbed through over the next few weeks.

I most definitely plan to buy a copy when I can afford it.

Thank you, Joe, for all you have done and what you continue to do! Juice on!

(ps, there actually isn't 280 pp in the copy that I read--only 249 with the index)

I got this from NetGalley to review.

I'll admit, I'm rather skeptical of anything that might be a fad, and juicing seems to be one such thing, but Joe Cross makes a good case for juicing. This book is a bit of background, a bit of how to, and a lot of recipes.

While I'm still not sure I could do a full reboot, I do want to incorporate more juice (and just fruits and veggies in general) into my diet. I personally thing there is something to eating them whole, but hey, whatever gets you to increase

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a step-by-step guide on how to do a 3/5/10/15 or 30 day reboot. The recipes and shopping lists are super helpful, and you'll find a handful of motivational success stories as well as some good insights from the author.
